Afghanistan is a land with a turbulent history. Today the Afghan culture endures, reflecting the resilience and tenacity of the Afghan people. Operation Mercy is working together with local communities in many effective programs, such as, reducing infant mortality with Birth and Life Saving Skills –BliSS, providing Leadership Training and empowering women through the development of Self Help Groups.
Many children delight in books. We publish and distribute 'good books' for Afghan children with positive cultural themes.

Birth Life Saving Skills (BLiSS) training continues to be tremendously effective in providing safer environments for pregnant mothers and infants both during and after childbirth. Our participatory educational training is being modeled and taught amongst other NGO’s working with women in Afghanistan to reduce mother and infant mortality rates. Training men and women to teach BLiSS is an effective means to reproduce this valuable work.

The Wakhi people live in villages in the north eastern and poorest part of the Wakhan valley in Afghanistan.
Our project in the Wakhan is multifaceted, with BLiSS training, immunisation programs, and varied education and health trainings. By working with the Wakhi people, communities are becoming empowered to make positive changes and child and maternal mortality have shown reductions.
