The reputed home of the Queen of Sheba, Yemen sits at the crossroads of Africa, the Middle East and Asia. Its capital, Sana’a is regarded as being the world’s oldest city. Ancient spices, such as frankincense and myrrh were traded here along spice routes that traversed the country thousands of years ago. However, Yemen has been modernising and opening up to the world while still maintaining its distinctive character and intrigue.
Operation Mercy began working in Yemen under the name MERCYemen in 2004, focusing on poverty reduction and health education. We have successfully implemented various community development projects gaining the trust of local people and government officials.
Today Operation Mercy continues to target poverty reduction and improved health care through transformational community development projects in Yemen. By empowering local people in a gender sensitive and participatory way, we can enable sustainable change to improve the quality of life. We aim to align with the millennium goals that the UN outlined in the provinces of Sana’a and Taiz.
